Chest X-Ray Interpretation*

When reading a chest x-ray, describe the findings in the following order:

  • View (Is the film an AP, PA, or lateral projection?)
  • Exposure (Is the x-ray properly exposed?
  • Centering (Is the x-ray properly centered?)
  • Bones (Comment on any abnormalities of the skeleton)
  • Lung fields (including blood vessels and pleura)
  • Cardiac silhouette
  • Mediastinum
  • Costophrenic/cardiophrenic angles
  • Diaphragm
  • Soft tissue (Are there any soft tissue abnormalities?)
  • Summary of the findings

*Preferences regarding the order in which a chest x-ray is described may vary from one attending to another.
