The Curriculum Vitae
What is a curriculum vitae? The curriculum vitae,
also known as the CV, is similar to a resume. For most students, the creation of
the CV is an entirely new experience. Once created, the CV will be updated as you
progress through your career. It is a document that you will need not only for
residency application but also for job applications, grant proposals, and hospital
privileges.
- Educational institutions you have attended (location, dates
of attendance, degrees attained)
- Awards and honors
- Memberships in professional organizations (e.g., AMSA)
- Publications/presentations
- Work experience
- Research experience
- Community activities
What role does the CV play in the residency application
process? The CV plays an important role throughout the application process.
Recommendation letter-writers will often request a copy of your CV to help them
prepare your letter. A copy of your CV should also be given to the Dean to assist
him in the development of your Dean's letter. Residency applications usually
require you to submit your CV, which is often used with other parts of your
application as a screening tool to whittle down a larger applicant pool into a
smaller group which will then be interviewed.
