In 1998, after recognizing that many students receive little formal education in laboratory test interpretation, Dr. Samir Desai sought to develop a resource that could help students interpret abnormal lab tests in the context of the patient's clinical presentation.
In reviewing the available resources, he quickly realized that traditional textbooks listed the causes of an abnormal lab test result but generally stopped there. Often unclear to readers was the next step in the evaluation of the abnormality. To answer this question, Dr. Desai developed the unique step-by-step approach to lab test interpretation that forms the basis of the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine.
First edition
In 1999, Lexi-Comp published the first edition of the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine (see image below). It quickly became a popular resource, appealing to a wide variety of healthcare professionals, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and students.
Second edition
In 2002, Lexi-Comp published the second edition of the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine (see image below). As the second edition represented a significant increase in size over the first edition, also included with the second edition was the pocket version.
This package was enthusiastically received by educators at medical schools, physician assistant programs, and nurse practitioner programs, with a number of schools and programs adopting it as a recommended or required course book.
As the book increased in popularity, Lexi-Comp was often asked when the book would be available electronically. To meet demand and interest, Lexi-Comp added the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine to its Clinical Reference Library, which today is known as the highly acclaimed and widely regarded Lexi-Comp ONLINE.
Through its print and electronic versions, the book gained popularity worldwide, leading to editions printed in a number of other languages, including Italian and Turkish.
Third edition
In 2004, Lexi-Comp published the third edition of the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine (see image below). Like the second edition, the larger book was part of a package that also included the pocket version.
The new edition also was widely praised, receiving a four star Doody Health Science review rating. In her Doody review, Dr. Valerie Ng, chair of pathology and director of the Alameda County Medical Center, wrote "As a practicing clinical pathologist for 20 years, I was recently confronted on rounds with a clinical question in an area with which I was not familiar. I quickly pulled the pocket companion out and was able to inform the primary team of the best tests to order to help narrow their differential diagnosis."

This transfer allowed MD2B to produce the pocket version - Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine: Pocket - as a stand alone product for the very first time. In the summer of 2009, MD2B published the third edition of the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine: Pocket.
